What is the SCIP database?
SCIP stands for Substances of Concern In articles as such or in complex objects (Products). Established under the Waste Framework Directive (WFD), the database aims to support the circular economy by collecting information on articles containing Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) throughout their life cycle, including at the waste stage. SVHCs are substances that -due to their inherent adverse effects on human health or the environment- have been included on the REACH Candidate List for authorisation.
The information submitted to the SCIP database is publicly available and provides waste operators with increased insight into the presence of undesirable substances in recyclable materials, hence enabling the improvement of waste separation processes and recycling techniques over time.
EU companies that produce, import, distribute or otherwise supply articles containing SVHCs in a concentration above 0.1% (w/w%) have to submit information on these articles to the SCIP database.
